Welcome to episode 247 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.
Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.
Today’s guest is Owen Murray, Commercial Director at URhired. URhired is not just another AI tool; it is a lifeline designed purposely for neurodivergent job seekers. With over 85% of the neurodivergent community in the UK and Ireland facing unemployment or underemployment, Owen’s mission through URhired is clear and critical.
Owen’s journey began with personal experience. After being made redundant multiple times during his 13-year career in recruitment across companies like Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn, Owen felt a pressing need to create a more inclusive job seeking environment. His neurodivergent background and firsthand understanding of the traditional recruitment processes fueled his desire to transform the job-seeking landscape for others like him. This realisation prompted him to found URhired in 2023.
Owen describes how URhired’s initial model was a consultancy that provided neurodivergent job seekers with one-to-one help through every stage of their employment journey. This approach met with great success. However, scalability became a challenge and feedback from clients and mentors indicated the need to transform the model into a more scalable product. Owen explains how he pivoted the business into an e-learning platform, and later onto a more dynamic AI-based interview coaching platform named Tessa.
Tessa, the AI interview coach, is a testament to URhired’s innovative approach. This mobile app analyses a user’s CV and job specifications to conduct personalized one-on-one interview simulations. By doing so, Tessa helps build confidence and prepares job seekers for real-world interviews. Tessa’s unique selling point lies in its development by and for neurodivergent individuals. It addresses specific challenges faced by these job seekers, providing a tool that is not only innovative but empathetic.
Owen talks about how he adopted a unique business model by targeting organisations instead of individual consumers. Employment-focused entities, such as recruitment companies, football club foundations and universities, purchase access to the platform, providing it to their community members for free. This approach has opened unexpected markets and facilitated significant growth.
Owen’s iterative process of feedback and adaptation is central to URhired’s success. Through direct engagement with users and a dedication to implementing their suggestions, Owen continues to refine URhired’s offerings. This dedication to user-centered design ensures the tool stays relevant and effective.
According to Owen, the future involves further development of URhired’s AI capabilities, including possibly introducing avatars for more realistic interaction. The focus remains on product improvement through customer insights. Securing further funding will support expansion efforts and the hiring of key personnel to continue scaling effectively.
Owen’s journey with URhired demonstrates the transformative power of community support and mentorship. Enterprise Ireland and various accelerator programs have been pivotal, providing both the resources and the network necessary for success. Owen’s advice to budding entrepreneurs is clear: seek out accelerators and mentorships to ground your business in real-world needs.
In conclusion, URhired is more than just an employment tool; it’s a catalyst for change and an advocate for inclusivity in the job market. By continuing to innovate and adapt, Owen and his team at URhired is positioned to make a significant impact on the employment landscape for neurodivergent individuals, setting a benchmark for what inclusive employment tools can achieve.
