In a landmark milestone for assistive technology and Artificial Intelligence in Ireland, Meta has announced a major initiative donating 15,000 Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to Vision Ireland, Ireland’s national sight loss charity.
This donation is designed to cover every blind and visually impaired adult currently supported by the charity, making it one of the most significant rollouts of AI-powered assistive wearables in the world.
Transformative AI for Everyday Independence
For individuals living with low vision or total sight loss, performing everyday tasks often requires navigating additional steps—from waiting for someone to read mail to identifying items in the kitchen pantry. The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, built in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, leverage built-in cameras, open-ear speakers, and voice-activated multimodal AI to give users real-time information about the physical world around them.
Using simple voice commands, users can ask Meta AI to:
- Read text instantly: Signage, printed documents, letters, and restaurant menus.
- Identify items: Groceries in the fridge, clothing colors, and household products.
- Describe surroundings: Provide context on objects, people and environments.
- Stay connected: Make hands-free calls or initiate WhatsApp video calls for visual assistance when needed.
“What I really like about the glasses is the speed at which I get the information I need – instead of waiting for someone to read a letter or waiting for someone to tell me what I have in the fridge, I’ll just do it on impulse. Now I’m doing things for myself independently, that maybe before I wouldn’t have done.” – Brian Manning, Vision Ireland IT Trainer and User
