E230 ‘Building the Future of AI Sales Tools’ with Overpath’s Dermot O’Connor and Ross Keating

Welcome to episode 230 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.

Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.

Today’s guests are Ross Keating and Dermot O’Connor, Co-Founders at Overpath. In this episode, Ross and Dermot discuss how they’re steering the ship at Overpath, a company poised to redefine how sales teams operate. They share insights into their innovative approach to integrating AI into the sales process, along with lessons from their journey and their strategic vision for the future.

The conversation kicks off with an exploration of the role that context plays in current AI models. As Ross and Dermot explain, traditional AI models often struggle with “context overload,” which can lead to inconsistent and unreliable outcomes. Their pioneering solution, Molly, is designed to manage context in a way that optimises AI performance while providing sales representatives with accurate, timely guidance.

Dermot explains: “There’s a balancing act between managing the context window and getting value out of the large language model (LLM). A lot of our IP is in managing the context the right way for our sales language model to be as effective as it can be.”

They also delve into their backgrounds, discussing their journey to Overpath. Ross’s experience in sales leadership and founding the Lennox Academy (a sales training business) provided crucial insights into the needs of sales teams. Meanwhile, Dermot brings a robust technical background, having built and sold tech companies. Their combined experiences form the foundation for Overpath’s innovative strategies.

Starting a new company is challenging, but Ross and Dermot took a unique approach to hit the ground running. Instead of assembling a team from scratch, they capitalised on an opportunity to acquire an existing team experienced in building adjacent AI tech products. Dermot recalls, “We were able to hit the ground in January running with a fully coherent product engineering team.”

In a saturated market, building a “moat” is crucial. Overpath focuses on two key areas: brand and proprietary IP. They recruited Paul Quinlan to lead their content strategy, emphasising distribution alongside product development. Ross articulates, “We’re thinking about distribution as early as we are thinking about product. Our IP is also a significant differentiator, allowing Molly to deliver precise guidance.”

Pricing strategies in the AI realm are evolving and Overpath is tackling this challenge head-on with a usage-based model. Instead of traditional seat-based pricing, they propose viewing AI agents like teammates, providing ongoing support in sales processes. Ross explains, “It’s really important that we think about agents as teammates and re-imagine their role.”

A fascinating part of Overpath’s strategy is their commitment to “building in public,” a method inspired by industry leaders like Steven Bartlett. This approach involves openly sharing their development journey, thus building trust and authenticity with their audience. While initially hesitant, Dermot acknowledges the benefits of this transparent strategy: “It’s showing, I think people are sick of toxic positivity on social media and overly polished content.”

As AI continues to democratise the technology space, Overpath positions itself at the forefront of innovation in sales. However, Dermot and Ross remain candid about the challenges of navigating a crowded, fast-moving market. By focusing on differentiation and strategic distribution, Ross and Dermot are confident in their vision for Overpath’s future.

In reflecting on their journey and sharing their aspirations, they offer a thought-provoking perspective on the transformative potential of AI in sales. Their conversation is not just about building a company, it’s about redefining the sales landscape to encourage more human interactions, supported by smarter, more efficient systems.

With Molly at its helm, Overpath is paving the way for a new era of sales innovation, one that prioritises context, trust and strategic growth. As Ross aptly puts it, “We’re trying to take care of all the machine work so people can focus on the human side of their work.”
