Today’s guest is George Filippou, Founder at Mar-Sci. In the episode, George explores how AI and open-source tools can help advertisers manage budgets more effectively. Drawing on his breath of experience in the industry, George discusses the challenges of building trust in AI recommendations, the continued importance of human judgement and his journey from marketer to startup founder.
George’s journey began in Greece, where he studied political science before venturing into the business world with his friends in the beauty cosmetics industry. It was here that he found his passion for marketing; a passion that would take him across continents and into prominent roles at companies like Skyscanner, Facebook and TikTok. His academic pursuits did not stop at undergraduate studies as he completed a master’s in information systems management in the UK and a part-time PhD in Ireland, exploring causal inference and marketing.
Recognising the need for more open-source solutions in the digital realm, George launched Mar-Sci. As he explains, the company navigates between two business models: an online toolkit for medium-sized businesses and a bespoke, self-hosted solution for larger advertisers. Both models serve the same purpose: to help companies manage their marketing budgets effectively.
The conversation shifts to the impact of AI on marketing, a field dramatically transformed by the advent of machine learning and large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. George highlights that although businesses are not yet making drastic changes in budget allocation based solely on AI recommendations, the technology still offers significant advantages. The trust factor remains a challenge, but as he points out, humans are integral to the AI equation, providing the context and judgment that machines still lack.
George also emphasises the growing importance of open-source solutions. He shared his experience with Enterprise Ireland’s commercialisation fund, which supports researchers in transforming ideas into viable products. In an environment where digital marketing dynamics shift rapidly, Mar-Sci’s open-source approach allows for flexibility and adaptation, a critical factor in staying relevant and competitive.
Though AI presents exciting opportunities, it also introduces new challenges. George notes that traditional marketing practices are being upended and marketers must rethink their strategies to stay ahead. With marketing roles becoming increasingly complex, George believes businesses will gradually adapt to more automated processes, relying on AI to verify and evaluate their strategies.
As AI continues to reshape the marketing landscape, leaders like George Philippou and companies like Mar-Sci are paving the way for innovative solutions that balance technology with human insight. By maintaining a robust and flexible product roadmap, businesses can navigate the inevitable changes and thrive in the AI-driven marketplace.
