Welcome to episode 239 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.
Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.
Today’s guest is Kieran McCorry, National Technology Officer at Microsoft Ireland. Artificial Intelligence is not just a new frontier but a paradigm shift that’s reshaping business models globally. At the recent Dublin Tech Summit, these themes took centre stage as Kieran joined host Mark Kelly on the podcast to explore the current state and potential of AI diffusion in Ireland, highlighting both the progress and the obstacles that lie ahead.
Kieran discussed the latest State of Global AI Diffusion report which Ireland ranks fourth globally for AI adoption, with 48.4% of employees utilising AI daily. This noteworthy accomplishment marks Ireland as a leader within Europe, just behind Norway. However, while AI is increasingly pervasive in large businesses, saving approximately 5,000 hours monthly, its adoption in smaller enterprises remains limited to just 1,000 hours in savings, a stark reminder of the scaling barrier for AI technology.
Traditionally, businesses have approached AI with caution, striving first to understand its potential. However, the trend is changing. Kieran believes the challenge lies not in understanding, but in leveraging AI for transformative business changes. Recent research by Microsoft and Trinity College reveals that while 94% of Irish businesses are open to or are already using AI, only 10% are exploring AI’s advanced capabilities.
For businesses, maximising AI’s benefits demands more than just technical integration. Kieran highlights it requires a cultural shift and a reimagining of traditional workflows, tasks that demand significant courage and vision from leaders. The financial investment is considerable, and the return on investment can be elusive initially. Drawing on historical analogies, today’s leaders must adopt the mindset akin to laying down railways for long-term benefits.
Kieran also discusses how organisational change is challenging, especially with ingrained processes and human reluctance to embrace new methods. Yet, he states that the path forward is clear: companies must drive change incrementally, providing their teams with new tools and strategies to ensure AI becomes integral to their operations. As tools like Microsoft’s Copilot prove their worth, businesses who have embraced these changes find exponential productivity improvements.
Interestingly, public sector entities in Ireland are also starting to harness AI’s potential, promoting AI-based initiatives to enhance citizen services. Kieran says the public sector movement toward AI application underscores the transformational power AI holds, not just for private enterprises but for public administration as well.
Kieran concludes the episode on the critical insight that leadership is key to successful AI adoption. Leaders who are engaged and hands-on in AI initiatives set the tone for their organisations, dispelling fear and fostering an environment that encourages innovation and calculated risk-taking.
As we continue on our AI journey, organisations must focus on bridging gaps between potential and practice, turning AI from an aspirational tool into an everyday business enabler. This endeavour will require leadership, strategic investment and a willingness to innovate the very fabric of business operations.
For those ready to embark on or enhance their AI journey, AI Ireland offers literacy programs and workshops designed to arm executives and teams with the tools they need to bring AI into tangible and productive use. By focusing on applied AI rather than just theoretical exploration, businesses can begin to reap the practical benefits that AI promises.
With a future rich in possibility, it’s clear that the doors AI opens will lead to lucrative paths for those prepared to invest in its promise. Whether for large enterprises or SMEs, the AI journey is one worth undertaking – one that spells innovation, efficiency and a competitive edge in a world defined by digital advancement.
