Welcome to episode 232 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.
Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.
Today’s guest is Stephen Redmond, Founder and Chief AI Officer at Straitéis AI. Joining us for a third appearance on the AI Ireland podcast, Stephen discusses his continuous contributions to the field of artificial intelligence and its application across industries, as well as what to expect in his latest book, AI: Curious to Capable, Moving from AI Curiosity to Measurable Business Value.
Stephen began by discussing a concept that resonates deeply with many businesses: the “paving of a calf path.” This metaphor illustrates the notion of automating broken processes, resulting in nothing more than a faster but still flawed system. In the context of AI, organisations often make the mistake of simply automating inefficient processes rather than reimagining them with the capabilities AI offers. Instead of merely paving twisty roads, Stephen suggests considering entirely new methods, like using drones for deliveries, as a parallel to how AI can revamp operations.
After 30 years in the IT industry, the majority of which focused on data and AI, Stephen decided to establish Straitéis AI, which launched in late 2025. His motivation stemmed from a desire to immerse himself fully in AI work, an opportunity he felt was limited in previous roles. The company’s aim is to aid organisations, particularly SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), in navigating the AI landscape, a crucial endeavour given that SMEs make up 99% of Irish companies and employ a significant portion of the workforce.
Stephen’s passion for helping SMEs is evident in his newly published book, AI Curious to Capable. The book targets SMEs, guiding them through a framework developed by Stephen that encompasses six key pillars: leadership, data foundations, technology, AI literacy, governance and process integration. By addressing these aspects, SMEs can start their AI journey with confidence, leveraging AI to transform their business processes and gain a competitive edge.
A unique aspect of Stephen’s recent work has been the integration of AI into his writing process. Utilising tools like Claude, he has streamlined the process of drafting materials, allowing him to focus more on the content and less on the manual labour traditionally associated with writing. This approach not only accelerates production but also personalises it, ensuring the end product reflects his voice and expertise.
Throughout the podcast, Stephen shares practical advice for organisations looking to implement AI. He emphasises the importance of tailoring AI applications to specific business needs rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all solution. From enhancing finance operations with AI-enabled tools to leveraging AI for better process documentation, there are numerous ways companies can begin their AI journeys.
Stephen also encourages listeners to think creatively about AI implementations, viewing them as opportunities to innovate rather than mere technological upgrades. He underscores the role of ongoing assessment and adaptation, highlighting the benefits of repeated evaluations to track progress and address any regressions.
In conclusion, Stephen’s insights underline the transformative potential of AI for businesses of all sizes. Whether through his book or the tailored solutions offered by Straitéis AI, Stephen is committed to helping organisations not just understand AI but master its application for future success.
