E163 ‘How AI Is Revolutionising Mental Health in the Workplace’ with Lua Health’s Ger Perdisatt

Welcome to episode E163 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.

Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.

Today’s guest is Ger Perdisatt, Chief Executive Officer at Lua Health. As mental health awareness is becoming increasingly important, organizations are seeking innovative solutions to promote workplace wellness. In this episode, Ger joins host Mark Kelly on the podcast to share his insights on the transformative role of AI in early detection and support for mental health issues in corporate environments.

Ger’s journey from a successful career at Microsoft to leading Lua Health was driven by a passion for building something meaningful. He reflects on his time at Microsoft, where he honed his skills and learned about operating at scale. “I always felt it would be difficult to find another enterprise technology space that could capture my interest like Microsoft did,” he explains. However, his desire to create solutions in the mental health space, combined with the fortuitous timing of Lua searching for a new CEO, led him to take the leap.

At Lua Health, Ger emphasises the significance of early detection in mental health. “If you can get ahead of the curve and help people before their issues become acute, you get a much better outcome,” he notes. According to research by Deloitte, early intervention is crucial for improving mental health outcomes in the workplace.

Ger pointed out that many existing wellness programs are underutilized. “People often think, ‘I don’t need help right now,’ which can lead to missed opportunities for support,” he highlights. Lua Health aims to change this by utilising AI to analyse communication patterns within corporate chat data.

Lua Health leverages Natural Language Processing to assess changes in employees’ communication styles in platforms like Teams, Slack and Zoom. The AI identifies subtle linguistic shifts that may indicate rising stress or anxiety levels. For instance, Ger explains, “As individuals become more stressed, they might use more first-person pronouns or less future tense.”

Once the AI detects a potential issue, it proactively reaches out to employees via chat, offering resources and support before they even recognize they need help. This approach is not only innovative but also compassionate, aiming to create a culture of wellness within organisations.

Ger also highlights the robust technology underpinning Lua Health’s offerings. The platform’s development stemmed from a collaboration between AI and psychology PhD students, ensuring a strong foundation rooted in both clinical practice and technological expertise. His goal is to communicate this value clearly to organisations, emphasising that adopting AI solutions does not require significant upfront investment.

In discussions about mental health, confidentiality is paramount. Ger acknowledges the delicate balance between personalised support and protecting employees’ personal identifiable information. Lua Health addresses these concerns by ensuring that all chat data is anonymised and redacted before analysis.

To build trust, the team demonstrates the outputs of their technology to users using synthetic data, which allows potential clients to see how the system works without compromising real conversations.

It is clear that Lua Health is not just another player in the crowded wellness market. With its unique approach to early detection and intervention, the company aims to set a new standard for workplace mental health support.

The landscape of AI is evolving and Ger is optimistic about its potential to drive meaningful change. By combining technology with a deep understanding of human behavior, Lua Health is poised to help organisations foster healthier, more supportive work environments.

In conclusion, Ger’s insights into Lua Health reveal a forward-thinking approach to workplace wellness, one that prioritises early detection and proactive support for mental health challenges.

As companies continue to navigate the complexities of employee well-being, Lua Health stands out as a beacon of innovation and compassion in the corporate landscape. Embracing these AI-driven solutions could be a game changer for organisations looking to prioritise mental health in their workplaces.
