On April 16th, AI Ireland founder Mark Kelly hosted and moderated the “Improving Health Outcomes Through AI” at the National Healthcare Outcomes Conference at the RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland).  In the coming weeks, we will share bite-sized podcasts of the conference talks to inspire others about the possibilities of AI in healthcare. 

Today’s guest is Dr. Robert Ross, Senior Lecturer, School of Computer Science at TU Dublin and Funded Investigator at the ADAPT SFI Research Centre. Highlighting the paramount importance of ensuring accuracy and maintaining public trust, he articulated the need for a concerted effort to engender confidence among patients, healthcare professionals, and policymakers alike. A pivotal aspect of Robert’s presentation centered on the impending regulatory landscape, notably the European Union’s AI Act. Set to come into effect within the next 16 months, this legislative framework delineates risk levels associated with AI applications, particularly emphasising high-risk categories. 

In the context of healthcare, where AI-powered medical devices assume a pivotal role, Robert elucidated the stringent standards mandated by the AI Act. With an emphasis on reliability, safety and privacy, he underscored the imperative of aligning AI innovations with regulatory mandates to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

In navigating the regulatory terrain, he emphasised the nuanced evaluation of AI applications to discern those warranting heightened scrutiny from those falling within less stringent regulatory purview. While acknowledging the inevitability of increased scrutiny, he underscored the need for a balanced approach to foster innovation while safeguarding patient interests.
