E206 ‘The AI Revolution in Weather Forecasting’ with UCD’s Andrew Parnell

Welcome to episode 206 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.

Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.

Today’s guest is Andrew Parnell, Met Éireann Full Professor of Data Science for Weather and Climate at University College DublinIn the episode, Andrew discusses how his career path took an unexpected yet impactful turn. Originally aspiring to become a banker, Andrew now works at the intersection of climate change, AI and weather forecasting. This transition reflects not only a personal journey of aligning work with purpose but also highlights the larger narrative of how AI is revolutionising weather forecasting and related fields.

Andrew recounts a childhood aspiration to enter banking, drawn by a fascination with finance and making money. He pursued a degree in mathematics, anticipating a career in banking or similar sectors. However, his initial foray into marketing left him unfulfilled. The monotonous and repetitive work led him to seek more meaningful endeavours.

The turning point in Andrew’s career came after reading Naomi Klein’s “No Logo,” which expanded his awareness of global issues and redirected his focus toward climate change. This led him to pursue a PhD in Machine Learning for sea level rise, ushering him into a rewarding field where his skills could address pressing environmental challenges.

A significant portion of the episode delves into the transformative impact of AI on weather forecasting. Andrew explains that while traditional physics-based models have improved steadily over decades, AI models introduced in recent years have surpassed these advancements dramatically, boasting a 90% improvement in accuracy.

Despite their impressive results, Andrew notes that AI models still face challenges with extreme weather predictions. Physics models continue to hold an edge in these scenarios, highlighting an area ripe for innovation by integrating physics and AI-based approaches.

Andrew also explores the broader implications of AI technologies. Through neural networks and advanced computational capabilities, AI is revealing new connections between climate data and public health concerns, such as skin cancer and infectious diseases. By projecting potential future health challenges, AI provides tangible data to influence public policy and individual behaviour.

With all its potential, the application of AI in weather forecasting and climate science presents challenges, particularly in terms of computational energy consumption. Andrew stresses the importance of developing more efficient AI models to minimise their environmental impact.

Conversations around energy consumption are critical, especially as AI usage becomes more prevalent. Andrew points to ongoing efforts to train AI models more efficiently, potentially reducing the carbon footprint of these technologies.

Andrew shares insights on his current work with Met Éireann, focusing on supporting a new PhD program at University College Dublin. This initiative aims to nurture the next generation of innovators in AI and weather forecasting, coupling advanced training with real-world applications in climate science.

Students in this program will receive comprehensive education in AI, climate change and high-performance computing, preparing them to tackle the nuanced challenges of extreme weather and climate impacts on a global scale.

Andrew’s journey exemplifies how a shift in perspective can lead to groundbreaking contributions with far-reaching effects. From marketing disillusionment to pioneering AI applications in climate science, his story is one of passion and adaptability.

For those interested in taking actionable steps towards impact, whether through individual choices or academic pursuits, Andrew encourages embracing interdisciplinary approaches that fuse technology with societal needs. Together, these efforts can lead to meaningful advancements on both a local and global scale.
