The AI Advantage: Transforming Efficiency and Innovation in the Irish Workplace

Across many industries, professionals are discovering that artificial intelligence can help them save time and work more efficiently. If you haven’t started using AI at work yet, you might be missing an opportunity to streamline your daily tasks.
A Growing Trend in the Workplace

More and more people, including doctors, software developers, marketing experts and even writers, are utilising AI to handle routine work. These tools can assist with everything from recording therapy sessions and drafting emails to researching complex topics and debugging code.

In fact, a recent global survey of 31,000 desk-based workers found that 75% now rely on AI in their roles. Nearly half of these individuals began using AI in the past six months and 90% reported that it helped them save valuable time. Although some companies have restrictions on AI use – and occasionally the technology can produce errors that require extra attention – the overall benefit is clear: when used carefully, AI can free up hours each week.

AI as a Creative and Strategic Tool
Beyond automating simple tasks, many leading companies are developing custom AI applications to boost overall efficiency. These organisations are building internal chatbots and specialised tools to organise data and simplify repetitive processes. This evolution means that AI is not only a time – saver but also a strategic asset that helps firms grow and innovate in ways that go far beyond basic productivity.
Insights from an AI Leader
Mark Kelly, Founder of AI Ireland, shared some practical advice on incorporating AI into everyday work. He uses a variety of AI tools from companies such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic and even some custom-built solutions. Here are some of his key insights:

Enhancing Research and Analysis

Mark uses AI as a partner in his research efforts. For example, while analysing labour productivity, AI helped him gather essential statistics, identify trends and even pinpoint areas he might have overlooked. When reviewing a policy he drafted, the AI suggested additional points to consider, thereby strengthening his work.

In his view, AI is invaluable for synthesising vast amounts of information and preparing effective communications, such as meeting agendas and follow-up emails.

Crafting Effective Prompts

According to Mark, obtaining useful results from AI starts with providing clear context. He recommends beginning with a brief explanation of your goal followed by a straightforward question, and then refining your query with more specific follow-ups. For instance, when overwhelmed by a flood of emails during travel, he turns to Microsoft Teams’ Copilot to filter out messages that require his direct attention.

Similarly, if he’s looking for dinner ideas, he might ask AI to suggest recipes based on the ingredients he has on hand. His overall advice is to let AI take care of routine tasks so that you can focus on work that truly requires human creativity.

Adapting to New Ways of Working

One of the challenges Mark highlights is the need to adjust long-established work habits. Transitioning to AI-assisted methods can feel like learning a new skill—it takes time, practice and discipline. Another challenge is organising various sources of data into one cohesive system. To overcome this, Mark carefully curates his information in a single, well-organised folder.

Additionally, keeping pace with the rapid rate of AI innovation can be daunting. He stays informed by following industry news, attending relevant events and experimenting with new tools. Despite AI’s impressive capabilities, he always stresses the importance of double-checking its outputs, as the technology isn’t infallible.

Evolving Business Strategies

Mark notes that client concerns about AI have shifted over time. In the past, many businesses focused solely on finding the most cost-effective or efficient AI applications. Today, however, companies are more interested in how AI can be integrated into their overall strategy.

They view AI as a smart addition to their workforce – like a well-trained intern – capable of handling tasks that free up human employees to concentrate on innovation and growth. This broader perspective is reshaping how organisations think about productivity and competitive advantage.
In Summary
AI is rapidly becoming a fundamental tool in a wide range of professional settings. By embracing AI, you can automate many routine tasks, gain deeper insights from your data and focus on the creative and strategic aspects of your work.

Whether you’re a dentist, a lawyer or any other professional, integrating AI into your workflow could be the key to unlocking more time and greater opportunities for success.
