E184 ‘Bridging AI and Accessibility’ with Version 1’s Filippo Sassi

Welcome to episode 184 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.

Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.

Today’s guest is Filippo Sassi, Head of the AI Labs at Version 1. Direct from the Guinness Enterprise Centre, Filippo delves into the nuances of what it means to lead an AI lab and innovate at the cutting edge of technology, while also giving more insights into their product SimpliText, which was selected for as a finalist in the Best Use of Responsible AI and Ethics category at the 2024 AI Awards.

Starting off the discussion, Filippo describes his role as not only incredibly cool but also deeply challenging. His team of data scientists, AI engineers and professional researchers work across the globe to employ AI technologies to solve business problems swiftly and effectively. Amidst rapidly evolving regulations and an ever-expanding open-source library landscape, the team persists in delivering value through quick prototyping and innovative solutions.

One of the significant innovations led by Filippo’s team is the AI Award nominated SimpliText. This is an AI application crafted for those with dyslexia, helping them comprehend complex texts. Born from a partnership with the Dyslexia Association, SimpliText leverages cutting-edge AI, such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and document intelligence, to simplify text and enhance readability.

SimpliText operates via a web application where users can simplify text by uploading documents and interacting with specific paragraphs. The challenge lies in retaining the original meaning while simplifying, which is crucial for ethical AI applications. The team navigates this challenge through continual iteration and optimization.

The impact of SimpliText is already being felt. Filippo shares heartening stories of users who have found newfound clarity and efficiency in their work through the application. This speaks volumes about the power of AI to transform daily experiences and reinforces the project’s inclusive mission.

Looking ahead, Filippo hints at exciting developments, including a browser plugin and the addition of translation features. Version 1’s work continuously strives towards expanding accessibility and utility for a broader audience.
