E179 ‘AI Solutions in Solar Physics and Business’ with Moofwd’s Jeremiah Scully

Welcome to episode E179 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.

Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.

Today’s guest is Jeremiah Scully, Senior AI R&D Engineer at Moofwd. In the episode, Jeremiah explores how he is applying AI from academic research in solar physics to impactful applications in the tech and finance sectors. A finalist for the Young AI Role Model of the Year award at the 2024 AI Awards, Jeremiah shares his journey, insights, and the projects that bridge the gap between solar physics and business solutions.

Jeremiah’s academic journey began in the field of solar physics where he focused on integrating AI for solar weather detection. This involved detecting solar flaring activities – massive explosions on the sun that can affect Earth’s infrastructure such as GPS systems and power grids. Utilising radio telescopes and innovations in computer vision, Jeremiah developed models to predict these occurrences, achieving a significant accuracy rate through innovative techniques like generative adversarial networks.

The transition from academia to business was seamless for Jeremiah, as he highlights that the fundamental AI models and algorithms don’t change – it’s the data that differs. Translating this knowledge to business environments, he emphasises the universal applicability of AI models, regardless of industry. At Moofwd, he leads projects in edtech and fintech, focusing on resource management, server traffic prediction and anomaly detection for enhanced security.

Jeremiah highlights challenges and hesitancies businesses face regarding AI adoption, particularly around privacy concerns with LLMs and generative AI. By customising AI models, companies can safely and effectively harness AI capabilities. He stresses the importance of adhering to company guidelines while utilising AI, emphasising opportunities for those who embrace these technologies to gain a competitive edge.

He also touches on how AI is increasingly diverse, with applications extending beyond traditional coding roles. Marketing, sales, and other non-technical fields are now integrating AI, underscoring its role as a transformative force across organisational pipelines. Embracing AI not only enhances operational efficiency but also attracts talent and prepares organisations for future challenges.

Jeremiah’s experience exemplifies the vast potential of AI to solve complex problems across varied sectors. His work at Moofwd and research in solar physics illustrate how AI can drive innovation and operational excellence. Jeremiah’s achievements remind us that the sky is not the limit when it comes to AI innovation – it’s just the beginning.
