Welcome to episode E165 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.
Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.
Today’s guest is Cian Hughes, Head of Venture Capital AI EMEA at Oracle. In the episode, Cian provides an in-depth look at his extensive background in technology and venture capital, as well as insights into the exciting developments Oracle is spearheading in the AI space. His journey from startup entrepreneur to venture capitalist to his current role at Oracle showcases his multi-faceted expertise in the world of tech and investment.
Cian’s career has spanned numerous industries, including tech giants like Intel and HP, startups and venture capital. He began his journey in technology working for Lotus Development, the creators of Lotus 1-2-3 and Lotus Notes. His time at Intel, particularly in international products at Leixlip, left a lasting impression as it exposed him to the complexities of large global corporations.
However, his career wasn’t just defined by established tech firms. Cian also dabbled in startups, before transitioning to venture capital in 2008. His venture into the investment world began with the Irish Technology Leadership Group (ITLG) and Silicon Valley Global (SVG). His focus shifted to helping startups in Ireland and the UK scale into the US market, using Silicon Valley as a launching pad. This unique combination of experiences gave him a 360-degree view of the startup ecosystem – from building products to scaling them globally.
In 2018, Cian joined Sure Valley Ventures as a partner before being approached by Oracle earlier this year to head up its venture capital division for AI in EMEA. The transition back to the corporate world was driven by Oracle’s deep focus on AI and Cian’s own passion for cutting-edge technology. As Cian points out, Oracle has long been at the forefront of technological advancement and its current focus on AI is no different.
Cian is now part of the SMB scale-up team at Oracle, helping startups and scale-ups leverage their world-class infrastructure to grow. Oracle’s extensive network of over 430,000 customers and its best-in-class GPU infrastructure provides a unique value proposition for startups, particularly those in AI. With partnerships with tech giants like NVIDIA and Microsoft, Oracle offers startups the resources they need to scale rapidly and effectively.
One of the major themes of the conversation was Oracle’s commitment to fostering AI innovation. Cian highlights Oracle’s cutting-edge GPU infrastructure and its partnership with NVIDIA, which ensures that startups have access to the hardware necessary to scale AI solutions. This is especially critical in a world where GPU shortages are a concern.
However, what sets Oracle apart isn’t just the technology. The company’s global partner network provides startups with unparalleled access to a vast customer base, allowing them to scale their operations quickly. Cian emphasises that Oracle’s support, both in terms of infrastructure and market access, is invaluable to startups looking to break into global markets.
Throughout the discussion, Cian speaks about how AI is poised to reshape industries, from healthcare to cybersecurity to robotics. Oracle has been at the forefront of this evolution, particularly through its acquisition of Cerner, which now forms the core of its healthcare division. By leveraging Oracle’s healthcare infrastructure, AI-driven startups in this space can scale rapidly while accessing a global customer base.
Cian also touches on the growing importance of GPUs in AI innovation, especially as the technology expands into areas like augmented reality, holographic systems and self-driving cars. In the coming years, he expects to see a greater reliance on AI in industries such as automotive and cybersecurity, where AI’s predictive capabilities will play a crucial role.
As Cian notes, AI is already deeply embedded in many aspects of everyday life, from smartphones to enterprise software. While the full potential of AI is yet to be realised, the infrastructure and support Oracle provides are paving the way for the next generation of AI-driven innovation.
When it comes to evaluating AI startups, he emphasises that VCs are primarily looking for solutions that solve real, pressing problems. A successful startup must address a genuine pain point and customers must be willing to pay for the solution. Beyond that, scalability is key. For venture capitalists, the goal is to invest in companies with the potential to grow into unicorns – valuations in the billions of dollars.
From his perspective, Oracle’s vision aligns closely with these principles. By providing startups with the infrastructure, market access and support they need to scale, Oracle is helping to drive AI innovation across the globe.
Looking ahead, Cian believes that AI will continue to transform industries and create new opportunities for startups. With advances in GPU technology, cybersecurity, robotics and quantum computing, the future of AI is bright. For startups in the EMEA region, Oracle’s commitment to fostering AI innovation offers a pathway to global success.
As Cian’s career trajectory demonstrates, staying at the cutting edge of technology requires a willingness to embrace change and continuously adapt. For Oracle, this means not only investing in AI infrastructure but also providing the support and market access that startups need to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape.
