Exciting Opportunities with the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants Program

Meta have announced that applications are now open for the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants program. This initiative is aimed at supporting innovative uses of our open source AI model that deliver significant societal benefits. 

Building on the success of last year’s Llama Impact Grants, which focused on crucial global issues such as education, the environment, and open innovation, this program is set to make an even greater impact.

Harnessing the Power of Open Source AI

AI stands out as a transformative technology, offering immense potential to boost human productivity, creativity and quality of life. It can drive economic growth and propel advances in education, science and innovation. 

By promoting open source AI, they aim to ensure broad access to the advantages AI offers. To further extend these opportunities globally, Meta are launching the second round of the Llama Impact Grants program.

Introducing Llama 3.1 Impact Grants

Applications are now open for the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants. They are looking for proposals that utilize the advanced features of our latest LLM model, Llama 3.1, for projects with significant economic and social impact. Llama 3.1 now supports several new languages, including French, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai.

It should stand as the only open source model that competes with leading AI models in general knowledge, steerability, reasoning, mathematics, tool use and multilingual translation. Meta are eager to see how these capabilities will be leveraged.

This year, they are awarding a total of $2 million USD through two application pathways: an open call for global submissions and a regional events series. Through the open call, eligible organisations worldwide can apply online for grants of up to $500,000 USD to support their projects.

Additionally, they will host a series of global events to provide technical guidance and mentorship to applicants. These events will address themes prioritised by local stakeholders, such as agriculture, scalable business solutions, health tech, cultural preservation, and more. 

Participants at these events will be eligible for specialized awards of up to $100,000 USD, in addition to the open call awards.

Reflecting on the Inaugural Llama Impact Grants

The inaugural Llama Impact Grants program supported groundbreaking uses of Meta’s open source AI models, Llama 2 and Llama 3, to tackle pressing global challenges. They received over 800 applications from more than 90 countries. 

Both finalists and runners-up benefited from mentorship, support and community engagement. Projects ranged from an AI-powered math teaching assistant to models addressing gaps in maternal healthcare information.

Meta are inspired by the innovative projects developed with Llama and look forward to seeing the exciting new applications of Llama 3.1 in the coming year.
