Welcome to episode 205 of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that explores the applications and research of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence on the island of Ireland.
Our mission is to increase the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness and everyone living in Ireland.
Today’s guest is Scott Lien, CEO and Co-Founder at GrandPad and David Walsh, Chairman at HaloCare. In this podcast, we explore how technology is being innovatively integrated into elderly care, offering transformative solutions to improve the quality of life for seniors. David and Scott are leading the way in this field, by applying Artificial Intelligence to tackle the challenges faced by older adults and their caregivers.
A recurring theme in our discussion was the profoundly positive impact of technology in combating loneliness and isolation. Scott and David shared their missions to reconnect seniors with their families, friends and caregivers. At HaloCare, technology enabled a man’s final wish to be fulfilled by living his last days at home and passing away in his own bed. At GrandPad, the technology rekindled a woman’s spark, reconnecting her digitally with her family and bringing joy back into her life through video calls and digital engagement.
The origins of both companies are rooted in personal stories and challenges. Scott discussed how the frustration his 80-year-old mother experienced with traditional smartphones inspired the creation of GrandPad. This wasn’t just about making a better gadget; it was about creating a seamless, empowering experience for seniors, designed with direct input from “grand advisors” in their eighties and nineties.
Similarly, David recounted his journey from growing up on a dairy farm in County Kerry to security innovations, which eventually led to the establishment of HaloCare. Observing the severe impacts of COVID-19 on vulnerable populations, particularly in nursing homes, HaloCare’s mission became clear: to support the elderly who choose to age in place, in their own homes, using technology.
Both GrandPad and HaloCare emphasise user-driven design and accessibility. For seniors, many of whom may have cognitive or physical challenges, technology can often be more of a barrier than a facilitator. Scott highlighted how GrandPad’s design simplifies everything – from the packaging to 24/7 customer service without the usual automated hurdles. Similarly, David spoke of using AI to predict and respond to anomalies in an individual’s daily routine, making interventions proactive rather than reactive.
AI plays a critical role in managing vast amounts of data and facilitating efficient care. At GrandPad, AI enhances customer interactions, summarising past engagements to enrich current ones. In HaloCare, AI analyses daily routines, vital signs, and interactions to predict potential health issues, ensuring timely interventions.
Both companies are focused on combining high touch with high tech, improving not just the efficiency of care but the quality of life for their users. By utilising AI for language translation, GrandPad breaks down linguistic barriers, enhancing communication between seniors and caregivers.
David and Scott’s stories aren’t just about business success; they’re about cultural impact. They emphasise the importance of hiring passionate individuals who relate deeply with the mission of improving elderly lives. Their organisations are mission-driven, ensuring that every technological advancement aligns with enhancing the users’ experience.
As we look to the future, leaders like Scott and David inspire not just by their technological innovations but by their compassionate vision for an inclusive, supportive world for our super seniors. Through platforms like GrandPad and HaloCare, they are proving that technology, when thoughtfully applied, can indeed bring about a revolution for the greater good.
