E141 ‘A System-Centric Approach in Healthcare AI Development’ with Mark Sujan

Today’s guest is Mark Sujan, Professor of Safety Science at Centre for Assuring Autonomy at the University of York. In the episode, Mark gives an overview of his talk at the RCSI Conference in which he talked about the need for a shift towards a human-centered approach to AI in healthcare, advocating for a transition from a technology-centric focus to a systems perspective. 

Mark highlights the importance of considering the complexity of clinical systems and designing AI technologies to work effectively within them, while also addressing concerns about safety and stakeholder engagement. He also stressed that safety in healthcare AI is not solely about the technology itself but rather about how it is used within the clinical system.

Mark discusses the need to design interactions that prioritise the well-being of patients, healthcare providers and other stakeholders, emphasising the importance of maintaining relationships in the face of technological advancements.

Addressing common fears surrounding AI, he acknowledges that much of the apprehension stems from media representations and concerns about job displacement. However, he argued that AI should be viewed as a tool to augment rather than replace human capabilities, potentially leading to improvements in healthcare delivery.

Mark speaks about the importance of earning and maintaining trust among patients and healthcare professionals, underscoring the need to reassure them that AI will not negatively impact their care or relationships. 

He emphasises the positive feedback from patients regarding AI in healthcare but noted the importance of addressing their concerns. This will include qualifying their support based on trust in healthcare providers and the assurance that AI will enhance, rather than detract from, their care experiences.

‘expl[ai]n!’ workshop pioneers AI Integration in Local Government Operations

The “expl[ai]n!” workshop, a collaborative initiative by Dublin City Council, Smart Dublin and the CONNECT Centre, marks a pivotal step towards integrating AI technologies within local government operations. 

Facilitated in partnership with Mark Kelly, Founder of AI Ireland, this innovative workshop aimed to enhance AI awareness among local authority staff, fostering a comprehensive understanding of both Traditional AI and Generative AI technologies. 

Participants, drawn from a wide range of departments within the Dublin City Council, engaged in a deep dive into AI’s potential risks and rewards, focusing on its application within the context of local governance.

Goals and Objectives

The workshop was designed with the following objectives:

Educational Enhancement

Equip participants with a foundational understanding of AI, distinguishing between Traditional AI and Generative AI, and their respective use cases and functionalities.

Risk Assessment

Guide attendees through a critical examination of AI applications, identifying potential risks and ethical considerations in various scenarios.

E138 Dragoș Tudorache, Member of the European Parliament and VP at Renew Europe Group

Today’s guest is Dragoș Tudorache, Member of the European Parliament and Vice-President of the Renew Europe Group. He is the LIBE rapporteur on the AI Act, and he sits on the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), the Committee of Inquiry to investigate the use of Pegasus and equivalent surveillance spyware (PEGA), the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE), and the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with the United States (D-US). He was the Chair of the Special Committee on AI in the Digital Age (AIDA).

Beginning his career in 1997 as a judge in Romania. After working on justice and anticorruption at the European Commission Representation in Romania, supporting the country’s EU accession, he joined the Commission as an official and subsequently, qualified for leadership roles in EU institutions. He was elected to the European Parliament in 2019. Dragos’ current interests in the European Parliament include security and defence, AI and new technologies, transatlantic issues, the Republic of Moldova and internal affairs.
