Welcome to episode three of the AI Ireland podcast, the show that breaks down the hype and explores the impact that Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are making on our everyday lives.

Our goal is to share with you the insights of technologists and data science enthusiasts to showcase the excellent work that is been done within AI in Ireland.

My guest on the show today is Deirdre Lee, the co-founder and CEO of Derilinx which is a world leader in providing high-quality Linked and Open Data solutions.

Deirdre is passionate about releasing the potential of data that is currently locked away in government agencies. Public-sector data can, and should be used to drive decision-making, fuel innovation and inspire change. However, this data can also be difficult to source and it also needs to be of high quality to be useful.

During her time as a Research Associate in Digital Government at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics in NUI Galway, Deridre saw the challenges that public bodies faced in finding, accessing and using the data they needed so she decided to come up with a solution to directly support public bodies address these issues.

Derilinx’s data-sharing platform datAdore helps organisations improve the accessibility of their data, paving the way for evidence-based decision-making, rich business intelligence and advanced data innovation. Derilinx supports the Irish Government’s National Open Data Portal data.gov.ie, which was recently awarded Number One Open Data Initiative across Europe for readiness, maturity and impact.

Derilinx believe that data is a valuable resource that should be cared for, nurtured and when appropriate, shared and reused. Unfortunately, this is not the case in many of today’s organisations, where data is locked away in silos and is of poor quality which makes the data difficult to find, access and use. It is their goal to make sure everyone is comfortable with finding, using and publishing data in a consistent and secure manner.

In this really interesting episode, you will learn about:

  • What was it that motivated Deirdre to set up Derilinx
  • The benefits that Derilinx’s Open Data platform can bring to organisations
  • The great work they are doing with data.gov.ie, Smart Cities and the transport infrastructure
  • The increase in awareness and adoption of Open Data policies
  • Trends Deirdre has noticed in data science since setting up Derilinx
  • Advice to companies on how to embrace data into their business
  • What she believes is in store for the future of Data Science
